Candidate Story with Katharina Bauer
Mag. (FH) Katharina Bauer works in the sector of Sales Management and has gained international experience in Marketing & Product Management. In this interview she recounts her experience with recruitment firms and gives an insight into the process with epunkt.
epunkt: Ms. Bauer, what is particularly important to you in your career?
Particularly important to me in a career is working in a company with short decision-making paths and clear structures, in which every member of staff knows what their role is and in which all members of staff are on the same side. Good cooperation with colleagues and being able to enjoy my work are just as important to me as an interesting set of responsibilities.
I value a culture of openness and mutual respect in a company. From the point of view of professional expertise, I don't mind a few "clashes", but always with certain standards. And finally in addition to the interest in my role, I still want enough space for leisure time.
Job hunting is always also a bit of an adventure. What experiences have you had over the course of various application procedures?
That's true! And from amusing to irritating situations, I've certainly seen a lot during my time looking for jobs. What I found very surprising was the first interview for my current job. I entered the office of the managing director and was suddenly confronted with 4 people; not only that, they seemed to be laughing and joking amongst each other. I was greeted with the words, "Welcome to the Inquisition!" Even though the interview then certainly put me through my paces, I have never laughed as much during an interview as I did during that meeting.
There was great chemistry immediately and in that situation I really had the opportunity to get to know my future bosses and colleagues. There were no prepared questionnaires to be "worked through", instead it was a conversation among equals.
What do you expect from a recruitment firm? Have you had experience with recruitment consultancies other than epunkt?
Primarily I expect professional behaviour from a recruitment firm, in regard to both their clients and their candidates. Many recruitment consultancies unfortunately gave me the impression that as a candidate one is just a means to an end.
I have seen recruitment consultants who started a sentence with, "which job was it again that you applied for, Job A or was it Job B?", and finally concluded the interview, having discussed the already previously provided CV, with a shake of the head and, "No, you're really not a good fit for the advertised position."
As a candidate I expect that the recruitment consultant will at least have scanned my CV through once to check that I am suitable for the position. And I also expect a certain standard of courtesy and respect.
What sets epunkt apart from other recruitment firms?
During the course of my candidacy at epunkt, I was looked after extremely professionally and was also kept up to date regularly with the current status of the application process. My consultant always gave me the impression that she was really passionate about her job and that she wanted to get the most out of the application procedure both for her client and for her candidate. Conversations were always very frank, and she was successful in giving me a very detailed and vivid picture of the company that was recruiting, as well as of my future colleagues and bosses, and the responsibilities of the role.
Can you give me a summarised insight into the process at epunkt?
I found the advertised position on the internet and applied to Ms. Hochsteiner-Rohde via the epunkt job portal. She called back very quickly and we agreed an interview date at her office. In the conversation that lasted about an hour, we discussed my career history as well as the advertised position and the company. We also spoke in detail about my perceptions of the future employer and whether I would be a good fit in terms of personality for the team of the company. Ms. Hochsteiner-Rohde also explained that I could expect a brief update from her every fortnight regarding the candidacy - even if there was nothing new to report. The company took its time with the recruitment procedure and Ms. Hochsteiner-Rohde regularly updated me on the situation. After some time we agreed a date for a second interview in the company. At that point Ms. Hochsteiner-Rohde again gave me all the details in advance and prepared me for the interview. I ultimately chose a different position, but that had nothing to do with the highly professional support provided by Ms. Hochsteiner-Rohde
What did you particularly like about epunkt?
What I was most enthusiastic about was that during the whole application procedure I always knew where I currently stood and when I could expect the next feedback (either from my consultant or from the company). And even when there was going to be a slight delay, I was also told about it. As a candidate one also feels very well supported here and if I am in a position to employ staff in future, then I will definitely work with epunkt and Ms. Hochsteiner-Rohde!
